SEAN PHELAN is currently Associate Director of Bands at Robert E. Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, TX. Sean earned the Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2018 as a student of Stephen W. Pratt, and holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied conducting with Scott Teeple and euphonium with John Stevens.
Sean’s drum corps career began in 2007 with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. In his time marching there, he served as horn sergeant, featured soloist, and drum major and received the 2012 Jim Jones Leadership award from DCI. Upon aging out, Sean joined the brass staff as intern, instructor, and then ultimately as caption head for the 2018 season.
From 2013 to 2016, Sean was Director of Orchestras and Associate Director of Bands at Oconomowoc High School in Wisconsin. Under his direction, the Oconomowoc Symphonic Band was invited to perform in the Wisconsin State Capitol Rotunda in March of 2014, and consistently achieved superior ratings at Wisconsin School Music Association concert festivals. While in Oconomowoc, Sean was also principal bassist and then Music Director of the Lake Country Orchestra. He has been an adjudicator for WSMA marching band contests since 2014 and continues to design and consult with several marching programs across the Midwest.
